Slumber party

Friends, there are few things in life that are better than a really good night’s sleep. If you don’t believe me, ask any parent of a newborn or a perimenopausal woman experiencing the continual agony of night sweats. After a full week with G, we have finally experienced a full night of sleep. And it was glorious

We took the plunge and removed his crate from our bedroom. To try things out, we took the dog bed from my office and placed it in the corner of the bedroom near the foot of the bed. This meant the dresser got to go back where it was (which made my OCD self very happy), and my husband got his nightstand back in the room (which made him very happy.)

As we were moving things around, you could actually see G dog working things out and connecting the dots in his head. He watched everything intently, his tail steadily wagging in excitement. When it was time to turn in later that evening, he actually scampered in before me and immediately curled up on his bed while I got ready in the bathroom. This seemed like a really good sign.

Once I got into bed, it wasn’t long before I drifted off into blissful slumber. If G moved around at all, I never heard it. I didn’t even hear him snore. For the first time since his arrival a week ago, I slept deeply and soundly. It felt like the most significant step forward in our relationship so far.

Around 7 am the next morning, I woke up to a pair of big brown eyes staring sweetly at me and the feeling of a wet snout resting on the bed near my hand. G was sitting calmly but his tail was wagging a mile a minute. I can honestly say it was so much more pleasant being woken up in this way than by the jarring sounds of an alarm clock. I could definitely get used to this…
